Website downtime; Internet attack mitigated (2/24/2017)

You may have experienced slow loading time or errors while attempting to visit or read a story on the Paterson Times website. Our digital platform was under heavy denial of service attacks from 7 am to 9 pm on 2/24/2017.

Our technicians were able to trace the attacker to a computer in Belgium (178.237.36.10) that was likely used as a proxy to launch the attacks. Once the attacker had been identified a long list of attacking machines were blocked from the system which allowed for intermittent access to the website without full restoration of service.

Service was restored and the attack was mitigated at 9 p.m. and new safeguards have been put in place to block future attackers.

We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused.

Our technicians have mitigated a hacking/flood attack on our website server that resulted in Paterson Times being offline from 8:09 a.m. to 10:35 a.m.

Our website was offline for approximately two hours this morning into the afternoon due to heavy number of visitors.

Paterson Times technicians were able to restore the website by 1 p.m.

Downtime began at 11 a.m. and ended at 1 p.m. We apologize for the inconvenience.

Twitter share count, once broken, now fixed

The Twitter share count feature that went offline and remained for a few weeks has been fixed. The counter that's used by hundreds of thousands of websites on the internet was disabled by Twitter.

We've since switched to a different mechanism to obtain the share count from the microblogging website.

Thank you for bearing with us as we worked to remove this minor issue that resulted from Twitter's actions.


Eight hours of downtime

We recently experienced an unexpectedly prolonged outage at our Chicago data center. The downtime lasted for 7 hours, 47 minutes and 2 seconds.

Paterson Times went offline at 4:30 p.m. on January 2, 2016. It was back online at 12:17 a.m. on January 3, 2016.

The outage resulted from a “physical fiber connection issue” between the internet connection provider and the facility in which the server racks are hosted.

The issue has been resolved. However, as of now, we are working to find alternative solutions to ensure such prolonged downtimes are prevented in the future.
